Donald Trump's Regime of Punishment and Favor

Trump's voracious urge for payback has swiftly evolved into a methodical framework. Within the year since his election, the chief executive's anger and whims have adopted the shape of administrative measures in ways comparable to historical dictatorial regimes. Justice department officials who fail to comply are summarily fired and replaced by supporters. Political officials who challenge him encounter prosecution, trial and sanctions. Adversaries have been designated under presidential memoranda as “unpatriotic”, “anti-Christian” and “anti-capitalist”, and menaced with legal action as “terrorists”.

Government Institutions Restructured

Each instance involving legal action of political opponents and protection for loyalists demonstrates its own unique qualities. However, notwithstanding their particular nature, they embody manifestations of what has emerged as a deliberate approach. These events are not coincidental. Trump's cleansing of Department of Justice prosecutors and FBI personnel, coupled with his installation of loyalists in high-level positions, began quickly, soon developed a regularity, and has now been shaped into a system. DoJ and the law enforcement agency have been restructured into political agencies under the president's explicit direction to carry out his directives. Wrongdoing has been made normal. It constitutes the retribution system.

Administration is more concerned with targeting the leader's perceived enemies than they are with safeguarding our public welfare.

Within the System

The beginnings of this framework has been exposed in the court filing of multiple former top Federal Bureau executives filed in late summer in the US district court in DC against agency head Kash Patel and top lawyer another official for illegal termination in “a campaign of revenge against them for what the accused considered to be a refusal to show sufficient political loyalty”. In the complaint that one official, the ex- temporary head, describes a discussion in which the director “freely acknowledged the illegality of his behavior”.

Driscoll had attempted to protect law enforcement officers from being terminated, the filing alleges. Patel told him that “administration officials” – interpreted by the official to be the presidential administration and DoJ – had directed him to fire all those who they identified as having participated in a law enforcement case against Trump. The filing continues: “Patel explained that he had to terminate the individuals his leaders told him to dismiss, because his chance to hold his own position relied on the dismissal of the officials who were involved in cases involving the President. The director explained that there was no way he or the official could do to halt these or any other terminations, because ‘the agency attempted to place the President in detention and he recalls it clearly.’” After he informed Patel he was breaking the agency's own internal rules, Patel allegedly said “he recognized that and he was aware the character of the swift terminations were almost certainly unlawful”.

Extensive Impact

Since Patel's claimed admission to the official, the DoJ and the Federal Bureau have been dismantled and redirected for the administration's system of punishment. Multiple of the FBI's high-ranking agents were dismissed or compelled to leave in the early weeks of the administration. Roughly thousands of legal professionals at DoJ have agreed to a “early exit scheme”. At least multiple government attorneys, among them those in the Manhattan division, resigned in dissent over what they considered as political interference in abandoning the legal action against the city leader, a political figure, in exchange for his assistance with the administration's Immigration and Customs Enforcement roundups of immigrants. The ethics division of DoJ, which oversees ethical violations, has been reduced to minimal staff. The equality section has been decimated: the majority of its personnel has departed. One-third of top officials at DoJ have resigned. The section upholding ecological regulations has lost 50% its supervisors.

Favors and Sanctions

In the mayor's situation, the acting US attorney for the southern district of New York, Danielle Sassoon, stepped down in protest against what she characterized as the “exchange”. The border official, the president's “enforcement chief,” showed up as the agent with Adams on television to announce: “If he doesn't come through, I'll be back in New York City.”. And, Emil Bove, previously the justice department figure and a former Trump attorney, who arranged the deal, was given an appellate federal judgeship, a possible stepping stone to the supreme court.

The president's protection for crimes committed while in power, granted by the unprecedented judgment of the GOP-led on the highest court, thus blocking his criminal case over the Capitol riot and maintaining his electoral prospects for the national vote, is the cornerstone on which he depends to shield his supporters. Given this protection, he has been empowered to authorize wrongdoing. The consequence of the supreme court decision infuses his administration and the GOP completely. The legal case has escalated. As Richard Nixon's legal adviser the figure commented about the Watergate
